• Partner Theodore Goddard/Addleshaw Goddard from 1978 until retirement in 2006, specialising in media litigation, public law and general commercial litigation
Important Cases
• Spycatcher litigation for Times Newspapers which extended the defence of the media in actions for breach of confidence brought by HMG
• Count Tolstoy v UK in which European Court of Human Rights limited power of the Court to award damages in defamation cases
• Reynolds v Times Newspapers – acting for The Sunday Times in action which created new defence of responsible journalism for the media
• WPA v Norwich Union – first e-mail libel action, acting for WPA which recovered substantial damages from Norwich Union
• Acting for the late King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan in numerous claims against the British and foreign media
• Acting for a number of Hollywood stars including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jennifer Aniston in successful claims against UK media for libel and breach of confidence/privacy
• Acting for Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones and OK! magazine against HELLO! magazine in action for breach of confidence arising from HELLO!’s publication of pirated photographs of the Douglases’ wedding
