The GDP is not the traditional two-year trainee route to become a qualified solicitor, for more information see training contracts,

BWB introduced a new graduate development programme to supply skills for a wide range of careers within BWB.

All will begin with a one-year fixed term contract where applicants will undertake a wide range of relatively routine duties. This will give applicants the opportunity to acclimatise into the demanding environment of a city law firm and to learn the culture, processes, procedures and IT systems of BWB.

We would anticipate that a selection of applicants will be offered entry at the end of year one into one of four broad career paths. These are:

  • Route 1- Fee Earner Support. Three tier career structure ending in team managers. The Team managers manage a team of legal administrators and are responsible for the delivery of fee earner support to a team of 10 – 15 lawyers. Team managers will liaise closely with each other, the Partners within their teams, the Partnership Executive Officer (PEO), HR and the Accounts team to provide a high level of service at all times.
  • Route 2 – Professional Entry Level Positions. Three tier career structure ending in a professional qualification within HR, BD, IT, Accounts, Administration and the possibility of others where all professional entry level positions will be filled from this programme. The professional departments within BWB are all located on one level, creating a vibrant yet hardworking atmosphere and ensuring that they provide the firm with the vital support in order to survive.
  • Route 3 & 4 – Paralegal / Legal Exec positions. Route 3 will need some initial expertise up to LPC or BVC. These will potentially take advantage of new part-time routes to qualification as a solicitor, being introduced by the SRA. We are willing to give our support to enable suitable candidates to follow these routes.

We already provide a career development opportunity for existing paralegals and senior paralegals, whereby they have the possibility of a third higher tier salary for those who become significant fee earners. Some of these are in Company Secretarial, Trademark and Immigration visa management.

N.B There is the potential for those applicants in Route 3 to apply for, in competition with all other candidates, for transfer to BWB’s full-time traditional solicitor trainee contract and we do encourage such applications – which have been very successful in the past.

What are we looking for?

A city law firm is a tough environment. We employ high quality staff who are deeply committed to provide the highest quality legal service to our unique client base. We strongly urge you to read our ethos which includes “worthwhile work for clients we respect”. Anyone who is unable or unwilling to reliably contribute their part to providing that high quality service simply will not survive. Those who lose the confidence of their team simply do not get work to do. Conversely those who deliver high quality results will find the range of their work expanding rapidly.
